Your company can spend the next two years refining a digital front door that many customers may never open. The website is not disappearing, but it is losing its position as the default place for discovery and comparison.
This is not another design problem. It is an investment question: keep treating the interface as the primary asset, or strengthen the verified company knowledge that search engines, assistants, and agents can use anywhere.
The website remains useful, but the durable asset is shifting from pages to company knowledge.
Search is turning into an answer market
A 2024 clickstream study by marketing research firm SparkToro and data provider Datos estimated that 59.7% of Google searches in the European Union and 58.5% in the United States ended without a click. The data predates widespread AI answers, so it does not show that AI caused this behavior. It shows that the search-click-website model was already under strain.
In a July 2025 analysis, the nonpartisan Pew Research Center tracked the web use of 900 U.S. adults during March 2025. When Google displayed an AI summary, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% without one. They clicked a source cited inside the summary only 1% of the time.
Search still matters, but selection into the answer increasingly comes before the visit. Rankings should therefore be joined by mention rate—how often relevant AI answers name your company—and AI share of voice, your visibility compared with competitors across those answers.
Visibility is moving from winning the click to being selected for the answer.
Agents turn answers into outcomes
An AI answer provides information. An AI agent can gather information, use tools, and coordinate an action within permissions set by people and systems.
At Google Cloud Next, the company's enterprise cloud conference, Google announced Agent2Agent, or A2A, in April 2025. Launched with support and contributions from more than 50 technology partners, the open protocol lets agents exchange information and coordinate work across different systems. It does not settle questions about payment, liability, fraud, or trust, so the pace of adoption remains uncertain.
Still, the mechanism changes competition. A customer agent could compare eligibility, availability, price, and warranty before arranging the next action. If a company's facts are inconsistent or inaccessible, the agent has little reliable material to use—even when the website looks excellent.
Agents make usable, trustworthy company information part of the buying experience.
The asset below every channel
Call the required asset a knowledge catalog: the verified, structured body of business knowledge, organized so software can interpret individual facts rather than scrape prose from pages. This is a useful operating concept, not the name of a Google product.
A catalog can include product specifications, service areas, pricing rules, policies, credentials, current availability, and answers to real customer questions. A website publishes pages for people; a knowledge catalog supplies verified facts to any authorized system that needs them.
The catalog sits below every channel: websites, apps, search engines, assistants, and agents. Each important fact needs an authoritative source, a business owner, an access rule, and a review date. The interface can change by the minute. The knowledge underneath must remain governed.

Structured content is the head start
Structured content stores meaning in reusable fields—such as product, region, price, and effective date—instead of burying it inside a finished page. In May 2025, Google advised site owners that structured data helps share information in machine-readable form, while also emphasizing unique, non-commodity content.
A headless content management system separates content from visual presentation and delivers it to different channels through software connections. Organizations with a modern headless CMS therefore have a head start: part of their content may already be modeled, reusable, and independent of a single website. It is not a complete answer. Structure without accuracy, ownership, and original knowledge merely makes weak information easier to distribute.
This is the market logic behind The Digital Singularity, the strategic thesis that digital experiences become adaptive and increasingly assembled by intelligent systems instead of fixed in advance. In that world, the CMS stops being only a page factory and becomes part of a governed knowledge layer.

Invest in control, not another redesign cycle
The near-term choice is not website or no website. It is whether each digital investment strengthens reusable knowledge or merely produces another presentation layer.
Ownership must be explicit. Business leaders should own meaning, accuracy, and policy; technology leaders should own access, integration, security, and reliability. The implementation partner may be the independent consultancy that built the content platform, but it should be selected on capability rather than familiarity.
Require headless-CMS implementation skill, knowledge governance, clear export rights and data location, strong access controls, and a tested handover. The supplier's fees and recommendations should not depend on incentives from a particular platform. This is not an argument for starving the frontend. It is an argument against letting another redesign consume the budget while the underlying knowledge remains fragmented.
Fund ownership and portability beneath the interface, not another layer of dependency.
GenUI reveals what will last
Generative user interfaces, or GenUI, are screens assembled or adapted in real time around a person's request. In November 2025, Google showed its Gemini 3 AI model designing and coding a custom interface in real time. In April 2026, it published an open specification intended to let agent-generated interfaces work across different technical systems.
That does not make design irrelevant. It moves design from a permanent container toward a temporary expression of trusted knowledge. Websites will remain one important expression, but they will not be the only one and often not the first.
GenUI will attract attention because people can see it. The knowledge catalog deserves investment because every interface—human-designed or machine-generated—will depend on what the business actually knows.
As interfaces become generated and temporary, verified knowledge becomes the durable digital asset.
